Subbody Butoh – Dance of Life
Subbody Butoh Method was developed by Rhizome Lee, a Japanese Butoh practitioner. “Subbody” means subconscious body. In the subconscious realm, away from the boundary of ego and daily consciousness, our mind and body melt into oneness and create world that is completely different from daily world. Though various conditioning techniques, a Subbody Butoh practitioner creates movements through exploring the subconscious realm. This workshop will focus on the essential aspects of Subbody Butoh: · Quiet down the daily consciousness and listen to the subtle body signals. · Go beyond our physical, psychological and social bounds in order to create movements that are novel and unique to the individual body. · Develop Subbody movements through opening eight channels (body feeling, movement, visual, audio, emotion, relationship, world-self image and thinking). · Explore movements through Hidden Body (Hidden Skin, Hidden Muscle, Hidden Joints, etc) · Through the Life Resonance with other Subbodies, become Co-body. This workshop requires no dance experience. Anyone who would like to explore his or her hidden creative potentials is welcome!

bangkok festival is over, last night i took ikuko to the airport. it was a great adventure to have her here.
i am also so grateful to have been able to perform and attend a few workshops with different dancers. i learn from the variety of those people. i want to dance more and more! i want to find my own butoh and flowers. and i hope to come back to your school one day to become a midwife. next year in february i will go to singapore to give some butoh and continuum workshops. and i will try the same here in bangkok; together with a yoga teacher friend, we are having a project of integrating butoh into yoga. some small steps ahead.

i just came back from japan and i will be performing at bangkok festival this friday and saturday with Ledoh, a burmese-born american butoh dancer. just found out yesterday so no much time to rehearse, but it is a good chance to dance dance dance experiment feel. check out his website www.ledoh.org

Asuka Asuka got permanent residence at Tiocan Asuka has organized intensive summer workshop at Geneva. It was so ideal place in the mountain which can view Mont Blanc on sunny day. There is a confortable community house named Tiocan which a dozen people can stay. Congratulation! It is the best place to open experimental activities for her and for us. Asuka used to experiment in various resonances to create an unique space, and invite people there. Tiocan will become one of the most interesting experimental space for Life Resonance in Europe. When we continue to ask Life "What and where do you want to do most?", oneday Life can find the best solution. I am so happy that old friend grows up to have own place. | 19, December, 2011 Depth of Hisako Horikawa By accident, I found two video clip of Hisako Horikawa. When I watched them, my breath has stopped by unexpected delicacy of beauty. I met her 13 years ago at International Creators Meeting at Caracas, Venezuella, and danced together for two weeks. At that time she was only one person who gave me a bitter critique to my "Infectious Fever" solo dance. " Your body is stolen by your movement". I needed several years to understand this word. And now, also I found that I still could not be a midwife enough for my students to listen to the darkness of body as sensitive as her. Today I was proud to start Butoh Festival Himalaya from tomorrow, but I encountered a new theme necessary to deepen next year. The darkness of body is infinitely deep. We need to deepen our reseach more and more without any rest. Thank you Hisako! |

A SubBody Butoh Workshop with a Touch of Contact. We will use noble silence, breath, walking excercises and the weakend body to get into a SubBody state. Then we will explore the Bugs Walk a.k.a. Bugs Crawl, a choreography and Butoh exercise by Hijikata Tatsumi. This workshop is valuable and interesting for beginners as well as experienced performers. | 1 September, 2011 Shisha in Greece The one month workshop in Greece is over. On the last day 14 participants performed for one hour at the industry museum in Syros island as a program of Festival. It started midnight 12:00 with a hundred audience. At the first part, each dancer hided at each place of museum and started together with three group. Each participant integrated own subbody and cobody and showed deep tast solo for ten munites. Only the fourteen solos attacked audience strongly. Because each dancer transform each own Shisha and transformed into various creature, hidden body, archtype and so on. And at the second part, slowly they started resonance as a group with moving to the last place with becoming various archetype, gohst, monster, witch,creature and so on. Shisha can transform quietly and infinitely. At the third part, all dancers come together at the last place. It was a open installatin place by various ofjects. They danced their own Kyu part and created so many strange relationship. Finally they find the ending with becoming Framan as the near death body. It was so unexpected successful performance. Dancer, Lights, Music and Audience become together as one finally. This piece will join in video dance project in Athens with edited by a participant, Viki. The title will be "Subway to Heaven". | 26 August, 2011 Landing of Dancing Princess One day of Greece workshop, we visited the Dolphin beach in Syros island. We sunk down under the water with holding a stone, and meditated as a fetus. And try landing on the beach as a "Framan" which is one of the most weakest body in his butoh body. "Framan" is discribed as a "Dancing Princess" in his main butoh book "Dancing Princess" who is the near death body which cannot stand up from floor. Though "The dancing princess" is Hijikata's main butoh book, it is wrote by extremely esoteric japanese with full of metaphor and original using way of words with dis regarding the grammer more than "Quiet House". I guess nobody have read the both totally even Butoh dancer. Then few people knows that the Dancing Princess is the most miserable Framan in Quiet House. Hijikata laerned weakened body from their movement as a despelate fish which is put on the floor. It looks as a primitive movement of origine life. This day participants became the "Dancing Princess" on the sea shore of Syros island. The shore is the one of ideal place to dance between death and life. |

| 22 August, 2011 At a deserted house In the third week of Greece, we visited a deserted house. I heard that it is abandoned camping house arround fourty years ago. It seemed as if an ideal mixture of "Sutuffed Spring" and "Gabadge Desposal place" in the butoh score of "Quiet House" which we are learning now. Arround there, participants found each own place and danced as a Shisha (dead). " Shisha transform their shapes quietly yet infinitely. It is not rare that they borrow the shapes of things on the earth with unexpected nonchalance.” (Quiet House 2nd chapter) In the third week, a eighty years woman joined in workshop. She is the very image of Kazuo Ohno with the same big hands. Mr.Ohno became famous after eighty years old. Kallitsa, also you can become a international butoh dancer from now. |

| ７ August, 2011 "Technique of Shisha" in Greece 1 The first week of one month intensive workshop in Greece is over. Here We are studying the essense of Hijikata Butoh method which is researching at Subbody Butoh School in these years. It is called as "The technique of Shisha". Hijikata wrote as a importance for himself in his last butoh score of his solo of "Quiet House". " Important Shisha transform their shapes quietly yet infinitely. It is not rare that they borrow the shapes of things on the earth with unexpected nonchalance.” (QH 2nd chapter) Until now, Butoh is understand as the technique of becoming the dead body by following his famous word , "Butoh is a corpse(= dead body) which try to stand desperately." But when we study his last butoh score, "Quiet House" carefully, we can notice that the word is merely for beginners of butoh. In the "Quiet House", there are no discription about the dead body, but full of technique for becoming Shisha is wrote. Shisha means the dead in Japanese. But, shisha is not the physical dead body, but it can transform quietly and infinitely into ecerything. Japanese deep culture is completely different from modern physical culture, but it is based on Animsm, which universal spirits are streaming and transforming flexiblly at everywhere beyond the border between life and dead. This delicate and unevitable misunderstanding based on the culture gap has disturbed to understand the true butoh for western people, though it is simplly saying. From Dead body to Shisha, they are so wide apart. Even me, until the last year we started practice to becoming ash body. it is proper as a entrance of butoh, but the way towad the real butoh is so far from the entrance. Not only becoming dead, but becoming Shisha, this infinite transformation technique is the essense of butoh. It has so deep and complex logic of multi-dimensional and non-dual world which is completely defferent from the daily world which is bound by dualistic logic. Now I can try to guide the Technique of Shisha through the work to condense the contents of Subbody Butoh school into some essenses as the following; Technique of Shisha Subbody -Becoming subconscious body(=subbody), through stopping daily conscious mind. Life resonance -Listening to subtle multi-dimensional life resonance, releasing from the binds of daily ego and self as a modern human. Infinite transformation -Transforming quietly and infinitely into various being between death and life by using the method of the reduction by X and regeneration. Reduction by X and regeneration -"Reduction by X" means to reduce something from the daily body and mind. ( For example, When we reduce fluidity from human body, it becomes solid body( stone or wood). When we reduce solidity from human body, it becomes fluid body (Ameba or any proto creature or water body). When we reduce both of fulidity and solidity from human body, it becomes vaporized body( QH 3, 4, 15) what can transform into everything naturally and infinitely When we reduce own will from us, we become passive body which is moved by something else. (The red god (QH 1) means someone which moves him.) When we reduce speed from human movement, it becomes subtle speed ( or the silence of speed; QH 3). When we reduce time, it becomes stilness ( QH 5, 8). When we reduce flexisiblity from our body, we become Stone body, Kugutsu body, or Belmelle (QH 10, 19). When we reduce the health from us, we become weakened body. When we reduce almost of vitality, it becomes Framan (=near death body, QH 3) When we reduce size from our body, we become boxed body or bottom body. When we reduce surface personality (or persona=mask) from us, infinite hidden bodies(=salmon faces; QH 1) will come out. When we reduce moderation of daily body, we become mad king (=Heriogabals QH 10, 22) When we reduce or regenerate age, we become baby, fetus or old man/woman. ...etc, etc. The transformation by X reduction and regeneration give us infinite posiblity of creation. Carrying Density and Jumiping wild -"Freedom of carrying density" (QH 9) and "Jumping wild" (QH 25-27) are the very charasteristic of Shisha and life resonance. - The missin ring of the previous method of butoh is "Carrying density" and "Jumiping wild". Hijikata parformed them in his weakened body butoh actually, but they are so subtle that people (includes me) could not catch them. Chimera and Nest body -The are so many qualia of Archetype in our darkenss of body. When we increase or decrease the number of qualia, we can create unique Chimera body( QH 10,11) or Nest body ( QH 8) which wears so many various qualia of Archtype. -Thus, the essense of the Technique of Shisha is "Reduction by X and regeneration". But, we could not understand enough the importance of the sunken logic which Hijikata found in the darkeness of body. -When we could use the logic of X reduction flexiblly, it is able to get the technique of "Carrying Densty" and "Jumping Wild" as a Life. Hidden skin Hijikata wrote about "the participation in the skin" (QH 20-27) as the final integration of the nest of eye, compaund eye, and multi layering. The skin means not only single layer of physical skin, but it means multi-layered Hidden skin. He wrote about the multi layered hidden skin and various spaces exactly at the butoh score of the "Bugs walk". Rezoming technique to resonate with behind worlds The rezoming method which resonates with various own behind worlds through multi-layered hidden skin by delicate bug's fear and bird's fear is necessary. WPD-B method These transformations are supported by WPD-B method which we controll the following four elements of the Whole body image, movement at a Part of body, subtle resonance at the Detail of part, resonance with Behind world. Resonace with Abyss We can create original necessary butoh through opening the resonance between each dancing place (part of body) and the abyss(=-infinite depth) of own behind world. Butoh of Life and Thechnique of Shisha
These are the essensial elements of "the Technique of Shisha". It means the same as "the Butoh of life" which Hijilata priented in his latest age. We will deepen it through group research by students of school and participants of workshop. And we will open it to the world through uploading them immdeately on our site. Free resonance in Switzerland Two weeks intensive workshop in Switzerland is over. It is opened on the 860m sea level mountain near Geneva. With 5 old students, Asuka, Pit, Belen, Vanessa, Dorothy, and Sebastian, Morgane, Aemon, Gary, Roger, Rachel, Maria Luiza(Colombia). I selected ten essenses of butoh method from the contents of first semester of subbody school 2011. They are Breath of Life, Subbody conditioning, Free resonance as cobody, Transparent body which open half and half to inside and outside, Weakened body, Hidden skin, Rhizoming, Chimera body, Carrying density, Jumiping wild as Shisha, Vaporized body, and WPD-B method (Whole, part, Detail and Behind world). Ay the last day, each students dancedat own favorite place and the others resonated freely. Students danced in the forest, on the old tree, in the green field, on the road, on the rooftop of the building, and so on. We started at three o'clock and ended at eight o'clock. They are resonating as if children who don't know fatigue. During the five hours, at some moments I could feel pure resonance of life without ego and self. It was so beautiful that I could be happy. We will deepen it in Greece with connecting Hijikata's Abyss of Quiet House. |

My one month intensive workshop starts today in Syros island, Greece. Small ripples of life resonance is spreading on the planet slowly. Today was my workshop. It was a lovely experience for me and for the
participants!
A full day workshop from 10 30 am to 5 pm. We started with just 4
people and ended with 8.
towards the end..i felt they wanted more.. and i too, felt that i wanted
to give/share more....midwife more.. very peaceful and calm.
maybe next time.
Next week I leave for the U.S for a residency. I will be creating
work with 9 other artists. Looking forward to it.

２ June, 2011WHO: Cell phone use can increase possible cancer riskI felt the hidden danger of mobile phone for long time. I have never used it. Because my life feels fatal danger against it. I met an important news, and inform it to all. Please listen to your life carefully. The voice from life is so subtle. (CNN) -- Radiation from cell phones can possibly cause cancer, according to the World Health Organization. The agency now lists mobile phone use in the same "carcinogenic hazard" category as lead, engine exhaust and chloroform. Before its announcement Tuesday, WHO had assured consumers that no adverse health effects had been established. A team of 31 scientists from 14 countries, including the United States, made the decision after reviewing peer-reviewed studies on cell phone safety. The team found enough evidence to categorize personal exposure as "possibly carcinogenic to humans." What that means is they found some evidence of increase in glioma and acoustic neuroma brain cancer for mobile phone users, but have not been able to draw conclusions for other types of cancers "The biggest problem we have is that we know most environmental factors
take several decades of exposure before we really see the consequences,"
said Dr. Keith Black, chairman of neurology at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center
in Los Angeles. The type of radiation coming out of a cell phone is called non-ionizing. It is not like an X-ray, but more like a very low-powered microwave oven.
"What microwave radiation does in most simplistic terms is similar to what happens to food in microwaves, essentially cooking the brain," Black said. "So in addition to leading to a development of cancer and tumors, there could be a whole host of other effects like cognitive memory function, since the memory temporal lobes are where we hold our cell phones." |

my heart- is like the cloud drifting , crying from afar to see life resonate below i don't know why life brought me here to cambodia to learn the language and the music and the dance and to teach meditation and yoga in the village my dream was to return to india in october and dance contact improv for 3 months and then butoh for 9 months now i have only sometimes the chance for deep movement conscious exploration but this project is powerful and beyond me people are coming for healing to learn yoga, meditation, conscious movement and fasting, healthy foods i am here for some time in cambodia now but when i see the pictures of the beautiful movement and resonance relationship arising my heart is so pained to not be moving with you all i am attaching a PDF file of the writings that i edited. it is only the first editing but it is a compilation that is organized... i thought it could be helpeful for the students, even now as it is unfinihsed... also they can give feedback on how to make better... 311 pages or so - it could be printed and bound. i am continuing to study the texts and the qualia and the movement of multi dimensional time... i hope to get some time in india in the end of 2011 or 2012... i hope that i am always resonating with the subbody school in dharamsala joel altmanJoel, you are welcome to come back at any time. He is going to have workshops in April. springdancedear lee, finally i find some time again to write you. from the event last weekend i received many honest and deep resonance... the whole evening seemed to touch people deeply... many people never saw butoh before and for some it was quite challenging:-) but then they could experience the dance with their own bodies... i tried to find a way the audience is more involved and after a concert and my performance i guided into a kind of ritualdance for 2 hours... the whole night was created under the content of contrasts: like winter and spring, life and death, darkness and light... this night i also danced for my grandmother which reached the end of her lifetime, and also suffering people from japan and libya passed trough me... soon i am going to have a little workshop, at the place i am living - surrounded by many unique instruments like didgeridoo trees, about 20 huge drums built from a woodartist and many more... right now i dosent make sense to translate webpage and workshop infos into english - cause there a no english speakers... but gradually i will do it... lee i wish you a great year with your students - they start to spread out everywhere - one month ago i met pillar and fabricio in berlin. its always great to met cobodies! lee you mentioned once - you think about to stop teaching soon? well i still think to join once more, cause there are still so many things to learn... i also still think how great it would be to create a book of the subbody method.. a unfinished book... a workbook for your students out in the world... and every student creates and manifest its own personal story out of it.. well just an idea:-) i still yould love to do it!! enjoy the awakening of nature with resonance pit View more: www.resonart.net |

An earthquake of magnitude 9.0 hit eastern Japan on 11 March. The number of death and the missing is over 24,000, and the tragic toll is expected to rise further. Even two weeks after the dreadful disaster, food, water, electricity, fuel, and means of communication remain all scarce commodities for many of the survivors in emergency shelters. The livelihoods in extensive areas in eastern Japan are virtually shattered.
WHY DO WE NEED YOUR SUPPORT?—Why ‘Pray for Japan’ in Cambodia?
As Japanese NGOs working in Cambodia, we wish to put together voices and support from Cambodian people and deliver them to the people of Japan. Japan has a long history of supporting Cambodia. We hope this event will further strengthen the friendship between the two countries. The messages will be sent to people in the disaster-hit areas through NGOs, as well as posted on various internet sites.

Deepest sympathy toward those who have been affected by the East Japan Earthquake. Our worries are now toward the atomic contamination regarding the power plant. The effects toward pregnant women and young kids are extremely large under these conditions. Due to those reasons, the people in EU have volunteered to share their living spaces and homes for bringing people in from Japan.
The priority is based on the health risk of atomic contamination.

High levels of radiation at stricken reactor
High levels of radiation were measured near the
Fukushima plant Wednesday morning. There are growing
concerns that the high radiation levels are due to
damage to the core containment vessel at the No. 2
reactor.
Radiation levels of 10,000 microsieverts (10
millisieverts) per hour were recorded at the main
entrance to the Fukushima plant at about 10:40 a.m.
An official of the Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency
said Wednesday, "There is a possibility that highly
concentrated radioactive materials may have leaked to
the outside atmosphere due to damage to the suppression
pool of the containment vessel of the No. 2 reactor."
Meanwhile, the Institute for Science and International Security of the United States released a statement Tuesday that said the situation at the Fukushima plant was now closer to a level 6 on the International Nuclear and Radiological Events scale, which ranks events from 1 to 7.
It said the situation at Fukushima "may unfortunately reach a level 7."
The Chernobyl nuclear accident of 1986 was assessed as a level 7 accident.

Tunamis, Fires, Explosions of oil tank has ocured.

Fabricio projects to invite Snow Lion to Berlin
Fabricio and Snow Lion (Dorjee)
Fabricio from Brasil, living in Germany projects to invite Snow Lion to Berlin.
Dorjee performedat the first Butoh Festival Himalaya last year. Fabricio was moved Dorjee's performance by the wild energy and deep sadness of Tibetan refugees which have lost nation and so many things.
Also Dorjee collaborated with Fabricio's event at Tibetan handicaped home as a Tibatan translater and dancer.
This is the first trial for the future Resonance net which we can resonate and collaborate beyond every kinds of borders; nation-state, culture, religion, money, gender, age, knowledge, and so on.
These borders are just common illusions in our consensus reality.
Life resonance is able to spread beyond all illusious borders in the daily world.
Through these trials, Resonance net will grow up to a Nomadic Rhizoming communication networks among different people on the planet.
I am dreaming this for long long long time, but it is going to come true.

BUTOH is called “Surrealism of Flesh” now a day as a contemporary dance form although has been started as an Experimental Performance in 1950s-60s, one of Japanese avant-garde art movement.
-Kan’s workshop direction-
Led by KATSURA Kan, explores the idea of “Transformation” which is the key to his understanding
of main stream of BUTOH. Kan will guide you the Origin of Tatsumi Hijikata’s
Butoh in his soul and theory as a video lectures. We will face to the new
cognitive approach of body with Kan’s movement through the practical method
of BUTOH NOTATION. He will instruct you how to “ listen to your weight” “ awake your noise”
“ focus on the other side of your reality” through his experiences of the
significant elements of BUTOH. The workshop is suitable for everyone with
and without previous BUTOH experience.
-short profile-
KATSURA Kan, a native of Kyoto, is a Master Butoh artist from among the ranks of Japan's
senior generation of Butoh. He performed with the seminal Butoh troupe, “Byakkosha”
1979-1981 and then researching in Indonesia and Thailand for 20 years.
In 2001, kan started work in Balkan region for the new communication works.
He is a celebrated solo and collaborative performer as well as a choreographer.
Kan has worked with what he calls “minority dancers” all over the world,
in remote locations throughout Africa, Europe and South East Asia for the
past 30 years, in addition to his creative works in cosmopolitan culture.
Currently, he is researching "Beckett BUTOH Notation" in NYC,
and “Oracle & Enigma” as an Dance Oratorio project in Athens.

Kaska starts workshop in Poland
The third happy news of the new year is from Poland.
Kaska who graduated 2009 course starts workshop in her birthland Poland.
She guided intersting workshop at the Himalayan Valley in Autumn, 2009. I enjoyed it a lot.
After finishing the course of 2009, she gave workshops at Chaing Mai and other places in Thailand.
Maybe, the deep experiences arround the sickness at Rishikesh, India was an initiation for sinking deeper realm.
We recieve so precious gifts through ill experience.
She must grow up a lot than before.

Odile opens workshop at New Orleans
Happy news are informed one after another in this new year.
Odile who has graduated one year course 2010 informed to start workshops at New Orleans, Luigiana, USA. Thetitle is "Ancestral Whispers" which is so suitable to her. She was always listening the qualia of her ancesters, not only in USA, and Dominika, but also listening to the ancesters of all of our human which spreaded from Africa to the planet, and also to the voices of the earth as the Gaia.
She has enough of experiences to teach at the school during last year.
I beleive that her workshop will be prety deep and rich.
I am so happy to introduce this. Then now people of USA can learn the life resonance at two place; at nothern part; Minesota by Kats D and at southern part; Luisiana by Odile.

Keep deepning experience as a midwife, it is not easy, but one of the most noble thing in life to throw away the ego and listening to the hidden breath of subbody and cobody in the darkness of other's body for encouraging toward one's own creation.

Julie performed Butoh on Japanese TV
Julie who has joined in last Summer intensive course performed her butoh on Japanese TV.
It is very rare case that butoh was shown on Japanese TV.
She is twenty years old French girl who is a student of Waseda University in Tokyo to research the unique beauty of Ankoku Butoh.
She started fron her unique bottom body and transformed vaporized body and so on. it is short but she could show the esssense of her butoh. I am so happy to see it.
